J. & R. Smith

J. & R. Smith was a carpet wholesaling company established in 1838 at South Castle Street in Liverpool. The firm moved to new premises in Williamson Square in 1868.

Kelly's 1947 Directory of Liverpool describes J. & R. Smith as "suppliers and fitters of carpets and linoleum" and "importers of Oriental carpets."

The company traded from the Williamson Square premises until at least 1962.

    I worked there in the 1950s and wondered what happened to the company as it was a very good firm to work for Robert Smith was the sole owner at the time and was very old then. Iheard it moved to BOLD STREET in the 60s which seemed a stupid thing to do as the eDiretors left with the trust of the company seemed totally inept and knew it would close its doors not long after moving but i cannot find the date it closed a very sad outcome for a well run business
